As we approach our 150th anniversary on 5th December 2025, we are proud of our rich heritage and the journey we’ve been on over the years.
John Redmayne set up his own stockbroking firm in 1875 with the aim to provide a first-class service to clients. We still take great pride in striving to offer the kind of personal service that builds trust and helps clients achieve ambitions for their families, businesses and communities.
We’re also focused on the future and ensuring we remain as relevant today as we were all those years ago.
Throughout our long history, it’s fair to say the firm and the financial services sector have seen plenty of change – from the Wall Street Crash to the Dot-Com bubble.
Back in 1875, Leeds was a city that had already witnessed a railway boom. Our ledgers and records show when John Redmayne (illustrated left) set up his company in the city, investors were keen to buy stocks in overseas railways, utility companies and tram networks in UK cities, among others.
Our records show our founder was also travelling overseas. He visited America in 1887, meeting stockbrokers in New York and Boston, building relationships and knowledge of overseas investments.
Among the first items purchased by John Redmayne was a coal scuttle and stationery. The items are detailed in his first ledger which dates back to 1875. The ledger and other items in our archive offer a fascinating insight into stockbroking at the time, with our founder investing in innovations that have had a lasting impact such as ready-to-wear clothing.
John Redmayne & Co’s deed box was where important papers and documents, such as share certificates, were kept under lock and key. Today it still plays an important role in our business. Our logo is based on a cube design inspired by the box.
By the time John Redmayne began his business in 1875, stockbroking and the local Leeds Stock Exchange were already well-established. Daily share lists were already being produced in 1843 and in 1844 the Leeds Stock Exchange Association was founded during the height of the railway boom.
After 150 years our values are as strong as they were at the start. Our purpose remains the same - to provide excellent personal investment services that enhance our clients’ wealth.
