US open: Stocks roughly flat ahead of earnings deluge
(Sharecast News) - US stocks were mixed on Tuesday, with investors sitting on their hands after the Dow and S&P 500 set fresh record highs the previous session.
They were also waiting on a slew of risk events that lay ahead, starting with another batch of key corporate updates scheduled for after the New York close.
"Monday's rally in US indices is taking a breather as investors fervently await earnings by Alphabet and Microsoft after hours on Tuesday, the Fed's interest rate decision and outlook on Wednesday and Apple, Amazon and Meta Platform earnings on Thursday as well as US Non-Farm Payrolls on Friday;" said Axel Rudolph, senior market analyst at IG.
"Oil and gold prices are little changed as well while the greenback is stuck in a tight sideways trading range."
As of 1715 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrials was edging up by 0.12% to 38,380.95, although the Nasdaq Composite had drifted lower by around half a percentage point to 15,544.44.
Microsoft would be first up and would have a lot to prove following a 65% surge in the stock over the past 12 months.
Alphabet shares were also trading at fresh record highs.
Also due out after markets close were earnings from Advanced Micro Devices, Starbucks, Electronic Arts and Juniper Networks.
UPS fell 8% after the delivery group missed fourth-quarter forecasts and underwhelmed with its guidance for 2024.
On the rise was General Motors with shares of the carmaker jumping 7% after delivering a profit of $2.1bn for the fourth quarter.
That was up from $2.0bn the year before, despite acknowledging that the pace of electric-vehicle growth has slowed.
