Amazon wins court battle over Luxembourg back taxes

(Sharecast News) - Luxembourg's Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled on Thursday that Amazon does not have to pay €250m in back taxes to Luxembourg. The decision was a significant setback for the European Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager, in her mission to combat favourable tax arrangements for multinational corporations.

"The Court of Justice confirms that the Commission has not established that the tax ruling given to Amazon by Luxembourg was state aid that was incompatible with the internal market," the court said in its ruling.

Amazon welcomed the decision, with a spokesperson telling Reuters that it confirmed Amazon followed all applicable laws and received no special treatment.

"We look forward to continuing to focus on delivering for our customers across Europe."
