Week ahead: Autumn statement, Fed minutes in focus

(Sharecast News) - Investors' focus over the coming week will be on the Chancellor's Autumn statement, on Tuesday, with the most recent economic data showing that he had approximately £90bn of leeway to tweak fiscal policy. According to Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK, tax cuts were unlikely.

But the possibility did exist that the government might try and help struggling businesses by extending full expensing beyond the currently anticipated end date of 2026.

Other possibilities included tweaks to pensions or stamp duty, as well as a shake-up of ISAs in order to boost domestic investment in the UK stock market and changes to fuel and tobacco duty, Hewson said.

The next day, the U.S. Federal Reserve will release the minutes of its last policy meeting.

Here, attention will be on any remarks that might validate market pricing for rate cuts in the back half of 2024.

Wednesday will also see the release of the latest weekly U.S. jobless claims data, monthly data for durable goods orders and the results of the University of Michigan's consumer confidence survey.

Those data points will be followed on Friday by S&P Global's Purchasing Managers' Indices for manufacturing and services covering the month of November.

That same consultancy will publish rival PMIs for the euro area and UK on Thursday.

To keep in mind, stock markets in the U.S. will be closed on Thursday in observance of the Thanksgiving Day holiday, while Friday's session will be a shortened one, ending at 1900 GMT.
