Tuesday preview: Euro area CPI, US housing starts in the spotlight

(Sharecast News) - The market spotlight on Tuesday will fall on the euro area. At 1000 BST, Eurostat will release a final reading for consumer price inflation in the single currency bloc during the month of August.

Consensus is that the preliminary estimates of 5.3% inflation year-on-year at both the core and headline levels will be confirmed.

In the U.S. meanwhile, the Department of Commerce was expected to report that housing permits and starts were little changed in August when compared to the month before.

The Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting was also set to kick off.

No change in the target range for the Fed funds rate, which is now at 5.25-5.75%, is anticipated.

However, concern regarding a possible reacceleration in price increases due to strong activity would see rate-setters at the Fed raise their median projection for the target range in 2024 to 4.875%, economists at BoA said in a research note sent to clients.

And a larger upshift is a risk, they added.

Against that backdrop, at 0930 BST the UK Treasury is scheduled to auction 30-year Gilts.
